Once you know the size of your tank you should work out approximately how many gallons of water it is going to hold when full, this is important because it will determine how much gravel you will need to build a healthy environment for your fish. Just a general guide is that for every gallon of water you have in your tank, you should put about one pound of gravel in also.

Gravel is one of the first fish aquarium accessories you should consider buying, this is because the good bacteria that is important for the health of your fish lives in the gravel at the bottom of your tank, if you have the correct amount of gravel to the size of your tank this will lead to having the correct amount of bacteria you need for healthy fish.

Before you add your gravel you should give it a good rinse in fresh water to clean any harmful chemicals or bacteria that can be residing in the gravel, after you have done this you can add it to the tank and then add your other items such as plants and ornaments which you have selected to add to your tank.

You will also require a good quality filter as part of your fish aquarium accessories, this will help filter out the bad bacteria that will inevitably build up in your tank. A good quality filter is essential when building your fish tank, it is one of the most important items you need to keep the water clean and healthy for your fish.

You should now be at the stage where you are ready to add the water, you are going to need some chemicals at this stage to add to the water to remove the chlorine and ammonias that exist in tap water.
